about us

Stories, oral traditions, ARTS, CULTURE and music have been the tools with which Pacific peoples have passed down their knowledge, histories and heritage for over four millenia, representing a central part of the many cultures that populate the vast Pacific Ocean. OUR MUSIC AND ARTS HAVE been the archive of our ancestors. It is how we have learned about the world around us, the histories of our peoples, the struggles we have faced, i, where the collective knowledge of our peoples has lived and passed on. It is where the collective memory of our peoples resides.

THIS IS OUR HOME combines these methods and rich heritage with modern storytelling mediums to take us on a personal and in-depth journey into the daily realities of climate change as experienced by front line Pacific peoples. This Is Our Home is the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative’s first major storytelling project and a key component of its Pacific campaign, where the momentum for the global push for several key climate achievements began.

This is our home brings the battle of Pacific communities confronting the daily onslaught of the climate crisis to the popular culture, exploring how PACIFIC values, faith and cultures have fostered innovation and resilience - creating the world’s foremost climate warriors taking on the Fossil Fuel Industry.

We explore these themes through the arts and cultures of the Pacific which we honour and draw from in this project.

ARTS, CULTURE…AND CLIMATE ACTION?

From Bob Dylan and Bob Marley to Marvin Gaye and Macklemore, arts and culture have been the heralds of social change for much of the last century with many of these moments captured in iconic music, arts and literature. THE PACIFIC HAS A LONG, STORIED TRADITION of communicating its reality through music.

from the freedom songs of samoa’s independence leaders in the early 1900s to the songs of lament from vanuatu and tokelau communities who endured the brutality of slavery at the hands of western colonial empires. struggle and song are part of our dna - and it is a legacy we continue znd build upon as we combat the climate crisis.

combining political advocacy, community organising with the vessel of culture and arts is a powerful way to reshape the narrative on climate change. arts and stories are a powerful means used throughout our history to move peoples and communities to action, whether it be nina simone, Marvin Gaye or countless others during the civil rights movement, the herbs during the nuclear free pacific campaign and even now, with frontline artists bringing the call for climate justice to the masses.

In an age where even facts are now coming into question, compelling storytelling and creativity takes on renewed importance, to break the stalemate of the political discourse with powerful, emotive, human-centred stories, moving hearts and minds to action. Art, when used in these grey spaces, brings light and colour to the decisions that shape our world, moving the discussion on climate change past the ideological gridlock that has long plagued it to the masses where it can penetrate hearts and minds, orienting us all to action.

  • This Is Our Home is a project of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative, a campaign calling for an international agreement among countries to halt the proliferation of fossil fuels that is damaging our planet and urgently transition to renewable energy.
